There are so many reasons why our synthetic wigs are bestsellers. They’re affordable, easy to use and simple to style, with these wigs particularly resistant to the ups and downs of the great British weather! Synthetic wigs are also very, very low maintenance – which can lead many wig wearers to not care for them in the way that they should be cared for.
With the right care, a synthetic wig can last far beyond its 4 to 6 month lifespan, giving you lots more use out of your favourite styles. Read on to discover our top tips for maintaining your wig for a longer life.
As with your natural hair, the effects of over-washing can be seen on synthetic wigs too. For the best results, don’t wash your wig too frequently. We’d recommend a thorough wash every 8 to 12 wears, or if product build-up becomes apparent.
Washing a synthetic style isn’t the same as cleansing your natural hair or a human hair wig. You’ll need a wig-safe shampoo and conditioner that’s preferably sulfate-free. You should also consider the temperature of the water you’re washing your wig in as EatAndGeek explains:
“No, it’s not recommended to use hot water to wash your synthetic wig. Hot water can cause the fibers to become brittle or damaged, leading to breakage or shedding. Additionally, hot water can also cause the color to fade or run, which can affect the overall appearance of the wig. Cold water is always the best option when washing a synthetic wig. It helps to preserve the color and texture of the fibers, and prevents damage or breakage.”
After washing, blot – don’t rub or wring – your wig to remove excess water. Finish by placing it on a wig stand to dry naturally away from direct heat and sunlight. Store your wig in the same way, or in a silk or satin bag, to preserve its shape and sleekness when not in use.
Removing knots and tangles to keep the wig as smooth and sleek as possible is another must when extending its lifespan. Detangle your synthetic wig regularly, starting at the ends before working your way towards the base of the wig. A wide-tooth comb or wig brush is the best tool for the job.
Matting and hard-to-remove knots make wigs difficult to wear and even trickier to style. Detangle gently on a daily basis to avoid this.
Friction comes from all angles, some you may have thought of and others that get completely overlooked. Contact with coat collars, scarves, hoods and even seat belts often fall into the latter category causing frizz at the nape and fibre breakdown that’s hard to see before it’s too late. Avoid unnecessary friction by opting for shorter styles or pinning up longer wigs into practical updos when at home.
Another source of friction is with your natural hair underneath. Wearing a wig cap can reduce this as well as absorb the sweat that keeps your wig cleaner for longer. Rotating your favourite synthetic styles can also help to minimise wear and tear, allowing fibres to rest and extending the lifespan of your wig collection overall.
There are several ways you can breathe new life into an old, well-worn wig. Many wig wearers trim their wigs just like they’d do to their natural hair. A quick trim can remove frizz and dryness that so easily affects the look and feel of wig fibres. Team this with the occasional deep condition, and you can restore softness and shape, reduce static, and reset your wig’s appearance.
