There are few things more irritating than an itchy wig. Whether it’s sweat and heat buildup or an allergic reaction to wig fibres, adhesives or detergents that’s the cause, finding ways to soothe an itchy, sensitive scalp is often a top priority for new and seasoned wig wearers. To help you on your way, we’re here to share our top tips to stop wig itching once and for all!
A clean scalp is a healthy scalp – that’s why scalp cleansing forms an essential part of every wig wearer’s maintenance regime.
A clean scalp will minimise the buildup of dirt, dead skin cells, oil and product, reducing itchiness, preventing scalp issues and even promoting hair growth. There is such a thing as over cleansing your natural hair and scalp however, with the impact of over-washing doing more harm than good as Derma Beauty Hacks explains:
“Your scalp naturally produces sebum, an oil that moisturizes and protects your hair. Washing too frequently strips away this oil, which doesn’t just dry out your strands but also signals your scalp to produce even more sebum to compensate. The result? A frustrating cycle of greasy roots, brittle ends, and scalp issues that no amount of washing seems to fix.”
The trick is to get the frequency of hair and scalp washing just right. We’d recommend one to two washes each week with a sulfate-free shampoo to strike the balance between clean and over washed, and keep itchiness at bay.
The same cleanliness should apply to your wigs too, even if they’re brand new. Rinse or wash your wig before use, as well as every 7 to 10 wears or sooner if you need to.
Scalp dryness is a major trigger of wig itchiness, so don’t forget to moisturise after washing or as part of your daily wig care routine.
The best way to do this is naturally; there are several natural remedies for scalp dryness, but once again balance is key. Keep the natural oils you use lightweight – we love jojoba and argan oil – and remember, a little goes a long way.
Even with the best wig, exactly the right accessories and a tip top care routine, everyday wig wear can take its toll. Be sure to schedule in regular breaks to minimise scalp stress and itchiness. Every little helps, from short breaks during the day to whole nights off.
It’s not just your wig choice that matters when keeping things comfortable, how you accessorise your purchase can ensure a joyful wig wearing experience – minus the itchiness. It all starts with your wig cap. While wig caps are often seen as optional, they unlock many advantages, especially for those plagued with the dreaded wig itch!
When picking a wig cap, always choose a breathable fabric. Mesh or bamboo caps are top choices all year round, and actively promote healthy air flow and a comfortable, itch-free scalp.
Minimising the use of adhesives is another recommendation, and it’s one of the reasons why our wigs incorporate adjustable straps. If you do prefer the extra reassurance adhesives like glue and tape bring, choose formulas specifically developed for use on sensitive skin for the gentlest approach.
