Losing your hair is so much more than a physical change. It can affect you emotionally and mentally, with the turmoil that comes with temporary and permanent hair loss bringing up distress, anxiety and depression that only worsens the situation. Many cases of hair loss and thinning are vicious cycles, yet getting the support you need to negotiate these challenges can make it easier to manage.
There are several charities and organisations that provide financial aid and support for UK-based wig wearers, including the fantastic causes detailed below…
You don’t have to learn to live with hair loss alone. Wigs for Heroes is a grassroots charity serving cancer patients and their families across London, and their reach is growing. They offer a range of vital support options to help individuals and their loved ones through the most difficult times.
Alongside their pamper bags, post-surgery bra clinics, tutorials, events and support groups, their wig grants offer financial aid to those dealing with cancer-related hair loss. Trial applications for wig grants are now open.
If you’re supporting a child struggling with hair loss, the Little Princess Trust could provide an incredible step in the right direction. The charity has been helping children and young people with cancer and other conditions for 20 years, and provides free, real hair wigs to those aged up to 24 years old who have lost their hair during treatment.
Their efforts go further to support children and young people too as the Little Princess Trust’s story details:
“In 2016, thanks to the huge efforts of our fantastic fundraisers, we were able to begin funding scientists researching paediatric cancer. We have now funded 158 research projects searching for kinder and more effective treatments for all childhood cancers as we continue to follow our vision to give Hair and Hope to every young person with cancer until there is no longer a need for what we do.”
For support, advice and access to a dedicated network of professionals who can help, Alopecia UK is well positioned to assist those suffering from all types of alopecia. Their community and education programmes are particularly renowned for improving the lives of those impacted by hair loss conditions.
With more than 30 years of experience delivering breast care services, The Primrose Foundation has helped countless individuals. They’ve raised over £1.8 million through funding, generous public donations and support from local businesses since their establishment in 1995, and use every penny to improve patient care and offer comfort to those affected by breast cancer.
Wig funding is just one part of their service. They provide vouchers of up to £100 to give those undergoing treatment a new look, and confidence to match, despite hair loss and thinning challenges.
