With autumn officially upon us, mixing up your style for the season ahead is certainly on the agenda. As well as updating your wardrobe with the cooler weather in mind, altering your hairstyle and wider hair care routine will help you embrace the changing season – and the same rules apply for wig wearers!
We’re here to share our top tips for making the transition and overcoming the seasonal challenges that can leave your wig looking a little dry, deflated and dated during the autumn months.
As well as seasonal shedding affecting your natural hair, summer can take its toll on those wig fibres. Without the right protection, exposure to direct sunlight will not only cause colour fade, but leave strands looking and feeling frazzled.
If hair care and protection hasn’t been a priority during summer, now’s the time to act. Deep conditioning is the key to your wig’s revival. Here celebrity hairstylist Monaé Everett explains how to deep condition your wig for the best results this season:
“I saturate the freshly shampooed wig with the conditioner, place it into a plastic bag, and steam it inside of a hot towel for at least 20 minutes. After the wig is softened and moisturised, I detangle from the ends up to the roots. Then rinse the hair until the water runs clear. Mould the wig hair in the direction you want it to dry and place it under a hood dryer.”
While we recommend increasing the frequency of deep conditioning as the weather cools to ensure optimum hydration for wig fibres, the saying “less is more” comes to mind when shampooing.
Over-shampooing can do more harm than good to wigs causing excessive dehydration. Limit wig washes, and use a sulfate-free shampoo when the time does come to cleanse.
With temperatures falling and frizz becoming more manageable as a result, maintaining your wig style without heat is possible. By giving your wig a break from heat styling, you can minimise damage. If heat styling however is a must, be sure to protect it with the right wig-friendly products.
A rather simple and inexpensive way to switch up your style for autumn is to change the cut of your everyday wig. Whether you want to try one of these top autumn hair trends or experiment with a style you’ve always wanted to give a go, the start of a new season is the time to do just that.
For a timeless style that transcends the trends, why not try a layered look? Layers are great for people of all ages and with all wig colours, types and textures. Whatever the volume or length of your wig, adding layers is a sure-fire way to update your look, reduce bulk, freshen up your wig, and enjoy a discreet style that many wig wearers crave.
Kickstart the new season with a new look and a new wig – it’s the perfect early Christmas present!
