With the summer months almost officially here, the rising temperatures and lighter, longer days are cause for celebration for so many reasons. For those with human hair wigs however, the improving conditions can only mean one thing – frizz causing humidity!
As you may have experienced with your natural hair, humidity can do crazy things, and the same problems apply when rocking a human hair wig. Whether opting for one of our curly wigs or a straighter design, wearing your wig with confidence is all about taking control. Use the tips below to prevent humidity from ruining your summer style and stay looking fabulous all season long.
Water plays an instrumental role in the structure of human hair fibres, with water molecules present in the air – a.k.a. humidity – able to enter the hair shaft and change its very shape. How human hair fibres react to this process is what determines the overall impact of humidity. Curly hair for instance is generally more porous, with its ability to absorb more water making it particularly prone to frizz. The effects of humidity can be different for straight hair however as Hair Brief explains:
“Straight hair often struggles with the effects of humidity. The lightweight strands readily absorb moisture from the air, causing them to become limp, lifeless, and lacking in volume. Humid conditions can make straight hair appear flat and greasy, as the extra moisture disrupts the hair’s natural oil balance.”
Both low and high humidity environments have an impact on the look and feel of human hair wigs, but it is how you deal with it that matters.
Before we share our top tips for preventing frizz caused by humidity, it is important to state that while many of the same rules apply when preventing natural hair frizz and wig frizz, there are some key differences.
Your human hair wig isn’t fed by the natural oils your natural hair and scalp is, which means it will need extra care to fight frizz and stay in great condition. As a result, human hair wigs don’t self-moisturise, which causes them to dry out much faster and become more prone to frizz, especially in high humidity.
Contrary to popular belief, it is moisture that’s the key to keeping frizz under control this summer and every season after. Frizz may be created by human hair fibre taking moisture from humid air. But, by keeping your wig hydrated, you’re making it less porous, reducing that need for fibres to steal moisture from elsewhere.
We recommend following your sulfate-free shampoo with a hydrating, wig-friendly conditioner, as well as indulging in a deep conditioning treatment on occasion. You can also dry your human hair wig in a specific way to minimise the onset of frizz.
As a rule of thumb, avoid towel drying. Rubbing or wringing your wig with a regular towel can lift the cuticle, making it more susceptible to moisture intake. Use a microfibre towel instead before blow drying with plenty of heat protection. Blow dry your wig downwards, following the direction of the cuticle, for smooth results. Many wig wearers finish with a light oil or serum to keep things frizz-free, healthy and beautiful.
