A poor fitting wig isn’t just a bad look. A loose fit means less security and more worry, especially when completing more strenuous tasks like working out in your wig. Go too far the other way and there are more issues, with tight fitting wigs commonly linked to increased discomfort, scalp irritation, itchiness, and even hairline acne, which can cause yet more devastating consequences as WebMD explains:
“While pimples might not have any severe effects on your health, it does still affect your life. In cases of inflammatory acne along the hairline (and other areas of the face and body), you may develop permanent scarring when the inflammation clears. Pimples also affect your appearance, which can impact your emotional health.”
Avoiding a poor fit is however simpler than you think. Just use our step-by-step guide to wig measuring below…
There’s really only one essential you need to measure accurately for a wig, and that’s a soft, flexible tape measure so be sure to dig out your sewing tape! Rulers and other rigid measuring devices should be avoided as these won’t conform to the contours of your head.
If you have natural hair, make sure it’s flattened as much as possible. It’s the only way to get an accurate measurement. Slick your hair back, weave in some braids or don a wig cap to ensure a sleeker surface, easier measuring and a more precise result.
For the perfect fit, there are several measurements that you’ll need to take. The most important is the circumference of your head. To measure the circumference, wrap the tape around your head from the front hairline, behind the ears and around the nape of your neck. Record your measurements in inches before finding the right wig size for you using our handy size guides – more on this later!
Depending on the wig style you have your eye on, you may need to take other measurements. This includes from the front of your hairline to the nape of the neck, from ear to ear across the forehead, from ear to ear over the crown of the head, from temple to temple around the back of your head, and finally, the width of the nape from one side to the other.
Don’t just take one measurement and be done with it! You should take the measurements detailed above at least twice to guarantee complete accuracy. Watch out for discrepancies, they’ll only lead to a badly fitting wig.
The vast majority of wigs come in standard sizes, yet here at Wigs4u, we go above and beyond the usual petite, average and large sizes.
We stock petite wigs for those with a 21″ circumference and smaller; semi/petite for 21″ to 21.5” circumferences; average for heads sized between 21.5″ and 22.5″; Please refer to the wig’s sizing chart to discover which corresponds with your measurements.
It’s not uncommon for wig wearers to be in between sizes, which can leave them in a bit of a predicament. Choosing a larger size will after all be too loose, while a smaller size is certain to be tight fitting. Thankfully, all our wigs are fitted with adjustable straps, making them adjustable in size to ensure the perfect fit every time. You’ll find these elastic adjusters in the nape of the wig and extremely simple to alter.
All that’s left to do is find a beautiful wig, and you don’t have to search too far to discover a diverse collection of wig styles and colours. Click here to start shopping for your perfect match.
