With the latest NHS statistics revealing that 6.5 million men in the UK suffer from male pattern baldness, it’s safe to say that male hair loss is very common. Yet, despite its widespread nature, it’s not often talked about. Solutions like wigs and hairpieces are talked about even less by men, with men preferring to explore other treatments rather than reach for a cover-up as LloydsPharmacy discovered:
“When the men we surveyed first noticed their hair loss, the most common first step was to start using a hair loss shampoo (30%), followed by taking vitamins (29%) and changing their hairstyle 20%. This was the pattern across all age groups, apart from those aged 55 and over who started using hair loss shampoo and taking vitamins when they first noticed their hair loss. Those aged over 55 were also more likely to do nothing about it…”
According to the same research, just 5% of men experiencing baldness or thinning used a wig or hairpiece to conceal hair loss challenges, but this figure is on the rise. An increasing number of men are turning to wigs, here’s why!
Wigs do so much more than change your physical appearance. They provide a boost for your mental health too.
Most people’s mental wellbeing suffers significantly when experiencing hair loss or thinning. Many of us see a thick head of hair as a defining and important part of our look. With this in mind, losing your hair can leave you feeling less attractive, which can knock your confidence and lower your self-esteem. With a wig or hairpiece in tow however, many men feel more like themselves again.
Another reason why a rising number of men are choosing wigs over traditionally more popular hair loss treatments is the instant results that come with a good quality hair system. Unlike treatments like minoxidil and lifestyle changes, transformations can be seen right away with a wig. There’s no wait for coverage, while the results have a certainty that many other hair loss treatments don’t deliver.
Selected hair loss treatments can be painful, especially if you choose to go down the surgical route. A hair transplant leaves you at risk of sensitivity, swelling and discomfort, with full results only visible after a 6- to 12-month recovery period.
When comparing hair transplant surgery and hairpiece usage, the latter is non-invasive, pain-free, accessible and affordable – and requires no recovery time at all!
Men really are spoilt for choice when it comes to our range of wigs. Today’s hair systems are the best they’ve ever been, with natural and undetectable constructions that put comfort and discretion first. Lots of our designs also make custom styling possible, with men able to select a wig that’s the density, cut and colour they desire.
Wearing a wig that you love also means less pressure to resolve hair loss issues. Men get to feel in control of the way they look while pursuing treatments at their own pace.
Despite more and more men wearing wigs, they’re still not talking about it openly! We’d love to see men’s wigs normalised and the stigma removed for good, but it takes wearers like you to speak up. Share your hair loss journey and wig wearing experience over on Facebook and X with the Wigs4u community, and let’s work together to get more men talking.
