As well as being one of the hottest hair looks for spring, curls are the go-to style for so many other reasons. Curls offer a beautiful voluminous finish, making the hair look and feel full and luscious with very minimal effort. Curls can also frame the face to perfection, with the texture they make possible providing something extra special, whether you’re planning to wear them in a messy bun or out and proud!
The bottom line is curls are BEAUTIFUL! But despite their effortless look, they really do take some serious styling – even if you’re embracing a curly look with a beautifully styled wig. In this blog post, we share our top tips for styling your curly wig to perfection.
With curls very much in, finding the curly wig that’s right for you is easier than ever! Like any style however, you should consider your face shape when making your selection. If you have an oblong face shape, you’ll want to read this advice from TheHairStyler:
“This is a layered hairstyle (through the back, sides and top) with plenty of body and bounce. It’s a great curly hair style for oblong face shapes because the extra width in the sides and the side-swept bangs appear to reduce the vertical length of the face, making it look wider. In other words, the curls help to make your face shape even out a bit. Your focal points on your face will now be your chin area as well as your eye area.”
In addition to complementing your face shape and skin tone, opting for quality is also key. A higher quality wig will not only last longer, but be easier to style both in the short and long term.
Before you get to work styling your curly wig, you need to condition. The best curly looks are shiny and moisturised, and as your wig doesn’t benefit from the natural oils secreted by your scalp, it’ll need a helping hand to stay in tip top condition and frizz-free.
We recommend using a deep conditioner to replicate the nourishment wig fibres are missing and offset the damage exposure to saltwater, hard water, chlorine and sunlight can cause.
For a daily moisture boost, use our Revive Conditioning Spray. Suitable for use on wet or dry synthetic wigs, it’s the perfect way to protect fibres from tangling, deodorise and add lustre to your curls.
Avoid using heat
Heat and wigs don’t generally mix, with the damage heated styling tools cause significantly reducing a wig’s lifespan. Avoid using heat to refresh dropping curls, instead try heatless curling methods to add extra bounce to curly wig styles over time.
Detangling is one curly wig care step that should never be skipped. But, you don’t need any fancy or expensive tools to get the job done right. In fact, your fingers could be the best detangling tool. Alternatively, invest in a sturdy wide tooth comb to tease out those tangles without putting any unnecessary strain on wig fibres.
When switching to a curly style, it’s best to put your trusty wig brush away. While designed for use on wigs, wig brushes aren’t necessarily compatible with curly styles, especially if wet. Brushing a curly wig can cause breakages and frizz, as well as disrupt the curl pattern that you fell in love with in the first place.
Washing and drying your curly wig requires a different technique than shampooing and conditioning a straight wig.
Soak your curly wig, applying your chosen wig-friendly shampoo and conditioner using gentle strokes. Ensure the wig is rinsed thoroughly using lukewarm water, before blotting with a microfibre cloth to dry. The blotting technique is great for keeping curls intact, reducing frizz and removing excess water. Finish by leaving your wig to dry on a wig stand.
