Proper storage is essential for both human hair and synthetic wigs, directly affecting how long the wig lasts, how it looks and how easy it is to wear.
When wigs are stored correctly, they stay in great shape for longer. They’re also much simpler to style, with tangles, matting and flat finishes all things of the past with a solid storage and care plan. But, where do you even begin when storing your wig the right way? Read on for tips!
A wig stand is one wig care essential that no self-respecting wearer should be without! It’s the key to short term storage at home and on the go, with our wig stands compact and collapsible for extra ease.
By using a wig stand whenever you need to take a breather from wig wear, you’re helping to maintain your wig’s shape, prevent tangling and enhance airflow to keep it fresh and fabulous for so much longer. A robust wig stand, like ours, is also great for drying your wig. Here KitchenFiftySeven explains why air drying on a wig stand should be the preferred method for every wig wearer:
“Air-drying is considered the healthiest method for drying wigs, especially for human hair wigs. This method involves allowing the wig to dry naturally, without the use of heat styling tools. Air-drying helps preserve the natural moisture of the hair, reducing the risk of dryness and damage. However, this method can be time-consuming, and the wig may take several hours to dry completely.”
As a rule of thumb, you should never store a dirty wig. Your wig should be clean, dry, detangled and ready to wear for its next outing. That’s why we’d always recommend washing your wig in a wig-safe, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. You should also use a wig brush to detangle it thoroughly before air drying on your wig stand.
You should switch up your storage method when stowing your wig away for the long term, swapping your stand for a breathable bag or box. Before doing so make sure your wig is fully dry. Moisture can cause odour, mildew and irreversible fibre damage on both synthetic and human hair styles.
Many wearers also wrap their wig in a hair net and stuff its cap with tissue paper before placing it in the box or bag to help keep its style and shape. Avoid using airtight plastic containers for wig storage. Ventilation is needed to keep your wig in the very best condition when storing long term. A wig bag or box offers a breathable alternative.
Once your wig is in its box or bag, or on its stand, you may think your work is done. Where you store your wig storage however matters! Avoid storing your wig near sources of excessive heat or humidity, such as close to a radiator or in the bathroom. Heat and humidity can have a detrimental effect on wig fibres as well as dry out your look.
