Whatever the cause of your permanent or temporary hair loss, wearing a wig can be a huge transition and one that, at first, you may not necessarily be comfortable with. With this in mind, making wig wear as discreet as possible with a natural looking hairpiece is the key to embracing your new style at your own pace.

If you’re opting for a synthetic wig, removing excessive shine that may make your wig look less natural is also recommended. In this blog post, we share five routes to doing just that, so you can wear your wig with confidence.
One quick, easy and rather inexpensive trick that’ll make your synthetic wig look real right away is applying dry shampoo as Refinery29 recommends:
“Once your wig is snug and your lace is cut, it’s time to style your hair. Before you start, Stephen suggests spraying your wig with dry shampoo. ‘A lot of wigs — especially synthetic ones — can be extremely shiny, which causes the hair to look unnatural,’ she says. ‘Using dry shampoo is an amazing way to sop up some of that shine and make the strands look more real.’”
If you’re worried about leaving white residue behind, choose a tinted dry shampoo that complements the colour of your wig. Before using dry shampoo make sure your wig is completely dry, and spray generously before brushing out.
Like any hair care product, using dry shampoo will cause a build-up over time. While regular washing will solve this problem, this alternative method may just save you the hassle. Add a dryer sheet to a wide-tooth comb and use it to smooth your hair down. It’ll remove any excess shine without the risk of the product build-up.
Baby powder is often touted as a great way to remove unnatural shine, especially for lighter coloured wigs and hairpieces. While it may leave your wig looking less shiny, the heaviness of the baby powder will make it uncomfortable to wear. Other wig shininess remedies to avoid include fabric softener and apple cider vinegar, which can in fact do more harm than good.
With most wigs, any excessive shininess will fade with time and regular wig washing. It usually takes around 3 or 4 washes for your wig to become a little duller. Wash your wig before you wear it to ensure a look you feel confident with.
