With autumn well underway, we’re taking a closer look at the top hair colour trends this beautiful season brings – and red (in its many shades) seems to be the hue of the moment! From vibrant auburn and firelit balayage to deep copper (à la Pamela Anderson) and dark wine, embracing red during the months ahead is your route to a major seasonal glow-up.
Wig wearers can get in on the action too, with our range bursting with the most stunning red shades. Whether rocking red naturally or via a wig, redheads have no doubt had a powerful presence throughout history. Here we explore their fascinating story…
It was in Ancient Greece that the redhead was first mentioned. The gods worshipped during this time were thought to have had red hair and blue eyes, making it very much a coveted look in 500BC and the century that followed. As well as being described in literature, redheads were immortalised in art, with the Greeks even going as far as painting the hair of female statues red.
Red hair wasn’t always such a good omen however, especially if you were asked to don a red wig as Ginger Parrot explains:
“… it is said that the ancient Greeks thought that redheads turned into vampires when they died. Also, with slaves in ancient Greek and Roman times often being imported from northern territories, red wigs were given to actors depicting slaves in Greek and Roman theatre. Still, it is sometimes said that redheaded slaves were more expensive in ancient Rome, as they were often thought to bring good luck.”
While the Egyptians didn’t favour redheads initially – during the early days, people with red hair were sacrificed to end bad luck – things changed during Queen Cleopatra’s reign. During this period, red wigs became very much in fashion, with many suspecting Queen Cleopatra of being a natural redhead.
Fast forward to Tudor times, and red hair was just as desirable. Women would dye their hair and nails to embrace the red trend. The colouring process was long and arduous however, which made the wearing of red wigs a more popular and convenient alternative.
Despite being a natural redhead, and already bang on trend as a result, Queen Elizabeth I was famous for her use of red wigs. In fact, she was thought to be the proud owner of more than 80 red wigs towards the end of her life.
Today, red is a hugely desirable hair colour. It’s vibrant, unique and often seen as daring, and whether it comes naturally or not, it’s a great way to let your fiery side shine through!
