Your scalp needs more care and attention than you might think, with skin on this part of the body ageing 12 times faster than skin elsewhere according to this research. Ageing aside, a well-cared-for scalp is the key to wearing a wig well, comfortably and confidently.
Whether wearing a wig to disguise age-related hair thinning or to provide the coverage you need while facing temporary hair loss challenges, giving your scalp the TLC it deserves is an important part of the puzzle, especially when preparing for wig application…
To shave or not to shave is quite possibly one of the biggest dilemmas for wig wearers everywhere. While those wearing U-part wigs don’t have this option, shaving your head before the application of other wig types can unlock several perks. Shaving can make the application of your wig easier and less stressful. Some people also find it more comfortable to attach a wig to a shaved head.
For all the plus-points however comes just as many considerations, and these have the potential to impact the individual on not just a physical but an emotional level. Frequent shaving can result in scalp irritation and discomfort too, with the use of wig caps and adhesives further exacerbating symptoms as Healthline explains:
“If you’ve never had a bare scalp before, it can take some getting used to. There’s a chance you won’t like it at all. It can also cause a few minor problems… Frequent shaving can lead to dry, itchy scalp. You’ll have to be careful not to scratch with your fingernails and to use moisturizer liberally. Even the most careful person can end up with nicks and cuts. Shaving can also result in red, inflamed skin known as razor burn.”
Preparing your scalp well doesn’t have to mean shaving your head for wig wear. This is very much a personal preference and one that you may or may not be comfortable with.
Whether you’ve chosen to shave or not, scalp cleansing is crucial. We recommend using a specialist shampoo to leave the scalp squeaky clean, dirt free and ready for wig wear.
Our Bond Breaker Shampoo offers a rigorous clean that doesn’t leave any residue behind. That’s what makes it perfect when preparing the scalp for wig wear or clearing any residue following wig removal. Its intensive formula actively breaks down adhesive and solvent residue, scrubs the skin, and cleans the hair. Please note, this product is not suitable for use as a daily shampoo.
Treat every scalp cleanse like a spa treatment by applying your shampoo – or a gentler, everyday cleanser – to damp skin and massaging gently. Regular massage is a fantastic way to stimulate hair growth! Many wig wearers also apply a light conditioner if they have natural hair remaining to soften hair texture and reduce split ends. Be sure to rinse your scalp and allow it to dry thoroughly before applying your wig.
Keeping the scalp hydrated is essential, and you don’t have to overcomplicate things when searching for the perfect way to moisturise. Argan oil, coconut oil and jojoba oil are all great choices that support your skin and promote overall scalp health.
Apply your desired essential oil and leave overnight before rinsing thoroughly the next day. Massaging just a few drops of your favourite essential oil into your scalp every so often will work wonders!
