Everyone wants more voluminous hair, especially during summer. The summer season after all can not only leave you looking a little sweatier, it can cause your hair to have a flat, lifeless appearance that is pretty difficult to shake. Without the right styling, wigs are particularly prone to falling flat, that was until Permatease!Permatease – or Permalift as it is also known – is a crimping effect that’s transforming the anatomy of the wig for the better. When done correctly, it can transform the appearance of the wig for a more natural, lifted look that won’t let you down come summer and every season after. But what is Permatease? Here we reveal everything you need to know about this increasingly popular addition.
Permatease is a component that is increasingly added to wigs of all styles and colours. It permanently teases the hair to ensure increased volume and lift.
It’s made possible by short, matted fibres which sit at the base of the cap on the top of the wig. These shorter fibres are covered with longer strands to provide the lifted look many wigs are missing. The Permatease system can vary from wig to wig, with longer styles using crimping at the base of the cap instead of matting.
Due to its increased popularity, many wigs (even the styles with basic caps) already use Permatease. It is predominantly found at the crown, providing natural-looking volume and concealing wefts to make wig wear discreet.
Permatease is less common in open cap constructions that use a monofilament crown or parts. If your wig has Permatease, you should be able to see it upon close inspection in machine-made designs.
With Permatease, you can reap many rewards as a wig wearer. Permatease ensures your wig never falls flat and keeps its shape even after washing, drying and deep conditioning, meaning you’ll spend less time and money on wig styling.
The instant lift provided by the Permatease system also keeps the cap and wefts of your human hair or synthetic wig well concealed, which is perfect if you want to wear a wig without people noticing. Permatease wigs are particularly practical during the warmer months. As well as giving your scalp more room to breathe, Permatease styles are generally lighter in weight to ensure a cool, comfortable feeling all summer long.
Permatease is no doubt a step in the right direction, but only if applied and maintained correctly. Despite their ease, Permatease wigs need to be tamed just like any other wig style. They’re particularly prone to flyaways but styling and deep conditioning provide the solution to this Permatease problem.
Permatease can look matted without the right care too, making it more noticeable especially on wigs that are light in colour. In some circumstances, Permatease wigs can appear too voluminous. This is usually resolved over time with wig washing and drying.
Choosing a Permatease system isn’t your only option if you’re looking to increase the volume of your wig. Backcombing can provide a simple style fix without changing your wig as HolleewoodHair explains:
“Backcombing is one of the easiest ways to add volume to hair; it’s really simple and can give you a lot of lift at the roots. To tease your hair, lift a small section and slowly push a comb or teasing brush downwards towards your scalp. This rats the hair and builds volume at the roots. You can also use a pick to lift sections and shape the hair as you go.”
