While summer was all about keeping your cool and taming your frizzy wig, a new season brings a whole new set of challenges for wig wearers. The cooler weather and falling temperatures can pose just as much of a threat to a well-styled wig as heat and humidity. Yet, there are several steps you can take to stop your wig from drying out…
It’s recommended that you shampoo your wig every 8 to 10 wears. But, with less reliance on products and heat styling to keep your wig under control as the weather gets cooler, washing less frequently is one thing we’d advise.
Over-shampooing takes its toll whatever time of year it is, but during autumn and winter in particular, the dehydrating effect of shampooing too much can have an extra damaging impact. Reduce the frequency at this time of year, and use a sulfate-free shampoo for the best results.
Shampooing your wig less often may be the done thing during autumn and winter to prevent dehydration, yet conditioning more can provide the moisture you need to rock a naturally shiny, healthy looking wig as the season progresses.
Deep conditioning should already play a key role in your wig care routine. If it doesn’t, you’re seriously missing out as Cosmopolitan describes:
“One important thing to note: Just like the hair on your head, you always want to follow up your wig shampoo with a super-hydrating conditioner (or, like in this tutorial, a deep-conditioning treatment for extra shine). Skipping this step means you’re going to have a much harder time when it comes to detangling and styling—so don’t do it!”
Whether curling a straight or straightening a curly human hair style, the joy of most modern wigs is that heat styling is an option. That being said, you should only use heat styling tools with the right protection and on certain styles that allow heat.
Come autumn, hanging up your tools – or at least using them less often! – is a great way to give wig fibres a much-needed break and keep moisture locked into your look.
Never go out into the cold air with a wet wig. Even if your wig is a little damp, your carefully curated look will quickly become brittle, with the risk of fibre breakage increasing also. Take the time to thoroughly dry your wig before leaving the comfort (and warmth) of your home. Your wig will thank you for it!
Limit your exposure to the colder weather altogether but investing in a cute cover-up to see you through the season.
Whether wearing your wig and rocking a wrap or going completely wig-free with one of our stylish turbans, a coverup will minimise damage in the windiest and coldest conditions. Making a cover-up a part of your everyday this autumn will also keep your wig tangle- and frizz-free.
