Does your wig need a dose of deep conditioning?

by | Nov 10, 2021 | Wig care

Both synthetic and human hair wigs need a helping hand to stay in tip-top condition, especially when restoring the moisture that’s lost through regular wear. For synthetic wigs, in particular, maintaining a moisture-rich look is the key to achieving a natural and effortless appearance that makes wig wear unnoticeable.

Deep conditioning can be used on synthetic and human hair wigs to ensure a fabulous look time and time again, but what are the signs that say it’s time for deeper conditioning and what products can be used? Here we answer those all-important questions…

Is it time for deeper conditioning?

To make your wig last longer, it’s recommended that you shampoo and condition your wig regularly – every 7 wears if you have a synthetic wig and less often with human hair wigs. Deeper conditioning however is likely to be required the older your wig gets or the more you style.

Wigs after all don’t have the advantage of sebum production, natural oil that keeps hair fibres moisturised and healthy-looking. Exposure to saltwater, hard water, chlorine and sunlight can also contribute to your wig’s dry and brittle nature.

If your wig is dry, damaged, stiff and brittle, and isn’t looking as shiny as it once did, you could use a deep conditioning treatment. A lack of body can also be an indicator that deep conditioning would be beneficial.

What products can be used to deep condition?

There are some great deep conditioning products on the market, from leave-in conditioners and conditioning sprays to more intensive reconstructor treatments and wig masks. We stock a selection of deep conditioning treatments for synthetic and human hair wigs.

Our Jorgen Reconstructor Deep Conditioner has been specially designed for human hair wigs, being particularly effective on fibres that have been chemically damaged. It contains a potent mix of proteins, vitamins, minerals and moisture, which penetrate fibres to restore a natural-looking feel and shine.

For a conditioning spritz that can be used more regularly on synthetic fibres, try our Revive Conditioning Spray by Hair World. It can be used when your wig is wet or dry, provides a powerful deep condition, and is a great detangler and deodoriser.

Where do you get started?

The Revive Conditioning Spray can be used after shampooing or just before styling for a moisture-rich boost whenever you need it.

Our reconstructor can also be used as a regular conditioner after shampooing or as a more intensive treatment. Simply apply to your clean, damp wig; wrap in a hot towel; leave for 8 to 10 minutes; rinse thoroughly.

Celebrity hairstylist and author Monaé Everett suggests another method for the ultimate deep conditioning treatment:

“I saturate the freshly shampooed wig with the conditioner, place it into a plastic bag, and steam it inside of a hot towel for at least 20 minutes. After the wig is softened and moisturized, I detangle from the ends up to the roots. Then rinse the hair until the water runs clear. Mold the wig hair in the direction you want it to dry and place it under a hood dryer.”

When deep conditioning, pay special attention to the ends of fibres and don’t be afraid to add the product generously to ensure a replenishing moisture bomb for your wig. Before wearing your wig, make sure it is completely dry.

Air drying on a wig stand is the safest and best way to dry without the risk of heat damage.
